UNC Charlotte Youth Programs Camps on Campus 49er Minors Musical Theater

Campers will spend the week learning (and creating some of their own) dialogue and scripts, learn choreography, songs, and more!

Course Overview

Step Into the Spotlight & Create an Original Musical

Musical Theater is a high-energy, week-long performing arts camp designed for students in grades 5–8 who love music, storytelling, and being on stage. Campers take creative control as they collaborate with peers and instructors to write, stage, and perform their very own “jukebox” musical—featuring popular songs paired with original storylines.

From the first brainstorming session to the final bow, students experience the excitement and discipline of live theater in a supportive, creative environment.

From Idea to Stage: The Musical Theater Process

Campers explore every step of creating a musical production, gaining hands-on experience in both performance and behind-the-scenes creativity.

What Campers Will Create Together

  • Develop an original storyboard and plot for a jukebox-style musical.
  • Select popular songs that help tell the story and set the mood.
  • Write dialogue and scenes that connect music into a cohesive performance.
  • Learn how story, music, and movement work together on stage.

Build Performance Skills Through Acting, Singing & Movement

Throughout the week, campers practice the core elements of musical theater while growing in confidence and stage presence.

Performance & Creative Skills

  • Acting & Public Speaking: Practice projection, expression, and character development.
  • Movement & Choreography: Learn or create choreography that brings scenes and songs to life.
  • Creative Writing: Craft dialogue and scenes that support storytelling.
  • Stage Awareness: Understand blocking, timing, and working as an ensemble.

Campers of all experience levels are welcome—no prior theater background is required.

Teamwork, Creativity & Confidence

Musical Theater is a collaborative experience where students learn how to listen, share ideas, and support one another.

  • Strengthen teamwork and communication through group decision-making.
  • Develop creativity and problem-solving while adapting ideas into a live show.
  • Experience responsibility and discipline through rehearsals and performance preparation.

Final Showcase Performance

The week culminates in a live showcase performance, where campers share their original musical with friends and family.

A Celebration of Creativity

  • Perform a one-of-a-kind jukebox musical created entirely by campers.
  • Celebrate growth, collaboration, and artistic achievement.
  • Give students a proud moment to shine on stage.
