Overview
Indian dance is a multiplicitous construct. It is a mosaic of infinite shades and possibilities across historical and contemporary contexts. This initiative by the Department of Dance at UNC Charlotte recognizes the plethora of Indian dance in the US diaspora. It offers a range of courses based on the heterogeneity of techniques, aesthetics, and pedagogies that characterize the landscape of Indian dance. It offers theoretical perspectives on formal, standard, and innovative procedures that can be employed in the teaching and learning of Indian classical dance. Indian classical dance is an umbrella term that comprises eight dance forms, namely Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Manipuri, Kathhak, Sattriya, Kathakali, Mohiniattam, and Kuchipudi, that are recognized by the Indian nation-state but subsequently complicated by South Asian dance studies scholars for over-simplifications and historical marginalizations. Focusing on dance education practices in India, US diaspora, and higher education, this program brings in perspectives of established educators in the field of performance, creative practice, and scholarship. This certification in "Indian Classical Dance Pedagogy" also includes a module in arts administration and management as tailored towards Indian classical forms of expression.
