Professional Credit Courses and Credits

What are Professional Credit Courses?

Professional credit courses allow participants to recharge their skills as regional and global factors drive constant change. A professional credit course can provide fresh material and insight as well as feedback and direction from industry leaders and instructors.

Many professional organizations require their members to participate in defined amounts of continuing education credits to maintain their licenses or certifications each year. Here are some of the organizations that require continuing education credits for their members. If you DO NOT have any of the below credentials, please close this tab or window and go back to the previous screen to unselect professional credit and just receive general Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

How are the amounts of credit determined?

Credits are based on hours of study as experienced in the various courses that a person may be taking at the time. Many professional organizations define an hour as 50-minutes of class time.

How do I report credit hours?

Many professional organizations allow members to self-report continuing education activities as part of the recertification process.

With UNC Charlotte Continuing Education, you will receive an email five days after the completion of your course providing instructions on how to get to your student profile to retrieve your Record of Attendance (ROA). This ROA has specific information on how it relates to individual professional credit boards. Please visit your organization's website or contact our registration center for more information.

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credits for Certified Professional Accountants (CPAs)

Recommended CPE Credit

For CPAs, UNC Charlotte Continuing Education CPE course descriptions now make references to Recommended CPE Credit. These credits are based on a 50-minute hour (as they have always been). When you request “Recommended CPEs” at registration, your Record of Attendance will list the number of recommended CPE hours on it, as well as the NASBA Field of Study. As before, if you are audited, you will still submit your Record of Attendance to the governing board for approval.

Reporting CPE Credits for CPAs

CPE standards are established by NASBA (the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy). Before reporting credit, CPAs are advised to contact their state boards or other entities to which they report to determine their specific requirements.

Recommended CPE Credit is calculated in accordance with current CPE standards. CPE is measured by actual course length, with one 50-minute period equal to one CPE credit. If your state board requires that credit for group courses be calculated based on a 50-minute hour, you would receive 10 credits for a course that averaged a completion time of 500 minutes.

Accountants will most likely report credits to the NASBA Accountancy Licensee Database.
