Jeopardy! has been called one of the greatest game shows of all time with categories, clues, and answers in forms of questions. Over the past 12 years, UNC Charlotte Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Instructor Dr. Jonathan Mayhorn has used a version of Jeopardy in his classes to help his students learn the methodology needed to pass an exam as part of their certification.

However, with the move to online learning, Dr. Mayhorn needed a more interactive approach to keep the content more approachable and enjoyable. He presented this issue to UNC Charlotte's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Audiovisual Integration and Support for Learning Environments (AISLE) group. Knowing that gamification can enhance online learning, both groups worked together with Dr. Mayhorn on this project.

In addition to the Jeopardy-style game, CTL, AISLE, and Dr. Mayhorn developed another interactive experience called the Kotter Model Game. This game for the first time matches the five phases of the six sigma approach with Kotter's Model to change stagnant cultures.

Dr. Mayhorn helped to provide information for each of the learning games, as well as the questions, the scoring guidelines, and the feedback for student answers.

He has already seen a significant boost in learning outcomes that the new online versions of these games have provided. "I am glad to see how many of our students have benefited from all of the new things developed by CTL and AISLE. We brought these exciting games and ways of learning the Lean Six Sigma methodology to our online participants so that they can play from anywhere on their own," said Dr. Mayhorn.
