UNC Charlotte Youth Programs Camps on Campus Cool School LEGO Robotics 101

Hosted in partnership with the William States Lee College of Engineering, dive headfirst into the captivating realm of robots where you'll unravel their secrets, from car-building wizards to floor-vacuuming maestros.

Course Overview

Intro to Robotics for Young Innovators

LEGO Robotics 101 is a hands-on STEM camp designed for students in grades 4–5 who are curious about how robots move, think, and work. From self-driving cars to smart home devices, robots are shaping the future—and this camp is your child’s chance to explore the science and engineering behind them.

Through guided activities, creative challenges, and plenty of build time, campers discover how real engineers use design, coding, and problem-solving to bring robots to life.

Discover the World of Robots

Campers begin by exploring what robots are and how they are used in everyday life. From cars that park themselves to robots that help clean floors, kids learn that robotics is all around them.

Robots in the Real World

  • See how robots help in transportation, manufacturing, homes, and healthcare.
  • Understand the basic parts of a robot: sensors, motors, and controllers.
  • Learn how robots follow instructions and respond to their environment.

These foundations help campers connect what they build in camp to the technology they see every day.

Build & Program Robots with LEGO Education SPIKE™

Using the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ kit, campers design, build, and program their own robots to complete fun missions and challenges.

Hands-On Robotics Projects

  • Design and build robots using LEGO® bricks, motors, and sensors.
  • Use a kid-friendly coding interface to program robot movements and actions.
  • Experiment with different designs to improve speed, accuracy, and performance.
  • Complete challenges such as navigating obstacle courses or moving objects.

It’s a hands-on, minds-on experience where creativity meets technology and every child gets to feel like an engineer in training.

STEM Skills Your Child Will Develop

LEGO Robotics 101 goes beyond building cool robots—it helps campers develop key skills that support success in school and future STEM pathways.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand basic engineering principles like structure, stability, and motion.
  • Practice introductory coding concepts such as sequences, loops, and simple logic.
  • Strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving by testing and improving designs.
  • Build teamwork and communication skills while working with partners or small groups.
  • Gain confidence using technology and trying new STEM challenges.

Why Parents Choose LEGO Robotics 101

  • Specifically designed for upper elementary students in grades 4–5.
