UNC Charlotte Youth Programs Camps on Campus 49er Minors Build a Radio-Controlled (RC) Car!

From the chassis to the motor, campers construct every aspect of their radio controlled car in this hands-on camp.

Course Overview

A Hands-On Engineering Camp for Future Innovators

Build a Radio-Controlled (RC) Car! is the ultimate hands-on STEM experience for students in grades 5–8 who love to tinker, build, and race. Campers dive into the exciting world of RC car design, combining science, engineering, and creativity as they build a real working machine from the ground up.

This camp is perfect for curious middle schoolers who want to learn how things work—and feel the thrill of testing their own build on the track.

Build From Scratch: Assemble an RC Car Step by Step

Campers learn the fundamentals of remote-controlled vehicles by assembling their car piece by piece—developing real engineering skills along the way.

What Students Will Build

  • Assemble the car from chassis to motor, learning what each part does.
  • Connect components with hands-on practice using bolts, tools, and hardware.
  • Learn how power moves through the system to drive speed and performance.
  • Understand the basics of steering, stability, traction, and control.

Learn by Doing: Mechanics, Wiring & Troubleshooting

This is a true learn-by-doing camp. Students build confidence as they explore real-world engineering concepts, test ideas, and solve problems—just like engineers do.

STEM Skills Campers Practice

  • Mechanics: Understand gears, motion, and how forces impact movement.
  • Robotics Concepts: Explore how remote control signals and systems work together.
  • Basic Electrical Wiring: Make connections safely and learn how circuits power performance.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose issues, adjust designs, and improve results through testing.

Students leave with a stronger understanding of how machines work—and the satisfaction of solving real challenges with their own hands.

Race to the Finish: Test, Tune & Compete

Once the cars are assembled, it’s time to put them to the test on a custom-built track. Campers learn how to evaluate performance, make improvements, and compete in friendly races.

Track Day Highlights

  • Test speed, handling, and control through practice runs.
  • Make adjustments to improve precision and stability.
  • Compete for speed, accuracy, and bragging rights in fun challenges.
  • Learn sportsmanship, teamwork, and how to learn from every run.

Take It Home: A Fully Functional RC Car

The best part? Campers don’t just build and race—they leave with something real.

What Your Child Brings Home

  • A fully functional RC car they assembled themselves.
  • New skills in engineering, problem-solving, and design thinking.
  • A boost of confidence from completing a challenging, rewarding project.
  • A lasting reminder of what they can create with curiosity and effort.

By the end of the week, campers won’t just understand how machines move—they’ll have built one that flies down the track.

Why Parents Choose Build a Radio-Controlled (RC) Car!

  • Designed specifically for grades 5–8 with hands-on, age-appropriate engineering instruction.
  • Combines STEM learning with real tools, real builds, and real results.
  • Teaches practical skills: mechanics, basic wiring, troubleshooting, and design thinking.
  • Encourages focus, persistence, and confidence through project-based learning.
  • Includes a take-home project students are proud to show off.
