UNC Charlotte Youth Programs Camps on Campus 49er Minors Graphic & Interior Design Workshop

In this camp, campers will learn how to maximize space while making eye-catching designs.

Course Overview

Discover How Great Design Shapes the World Around Us

Have you ever wondered how buildings come to life, why certain rooms feel calm and inviting, or how art becomes a bold logo or eye-catching poster? The Graphic and Interior Design Workshop introduces students in grades 5–8 to the creative worlds of architecture, interior design, and graphic design through a week packed with hands-on projects.

Campers explore how designers think—combining imagination with planning, problem-solving, and visual storytelling to create spaces and graphics that feel “just right.”

Learn Design Thinking Through Hands-On Creativity

This workshop helps middle schoolers build real design skills by following the same process used by professional creatives: brainstorm, sketch, test ideas, and refine.

What Campers Will Practice

  • Creative problem-solving and idea development.
  • Planning and organizing designs with a clear purpose.
  • Learning how color, shape, space, and layout influence how something feels.
  • Giving and receiving feedback to improve designs.

Interior Design & Architecture Basics

Campers step into the role of interior designers and architects as they learn how spaces are planned and how design choices impact comfort, function, and style.

Space Planning & Style

  • Sketch simple floor plans and explore how rooms are laid out.
  • Experiment with color palettes, textures, and materials to set a mood.
  • Learn how design supports function—like flow, storage, and usability.
  • Create inspiration boards to communicate a design concept.

Graphic Design & Branding Projects

In the graphic design portion of the workshop, campers explore how visuals communicate messages. Students create digital graphics and branding projects that reflect personality, purpose, and style.

Digital Graphics & Visual Communication

  • Design logos, posters, and layouts using beginner-friendly digital tools.
  • Explore typography, balance, and composition in graphic design.
  • Create a simple brand identity (colors, style, and messaging) for a project theme.
  • Build confidence expressing ideas through visual storytelling.

Build a Portfolio of Original Work

By the end of the week, campers will have a collection of inspired creations—proof that great design starts with bold ideas. Students leave with projects that showcase their growth in planning, creativity, and visual communication.

Portfolio Highlights

  • Floor plan sketches and interior design concept work.
  • Color palettes and inspiration boards.
  • Graphic design pieces such as logos, posters, and branding concepts.
  • A stronger creative voice and confidence in design choices.
