STEAM Story Lab Adventures: Steam Writing

Course Overview

Where STEAM Meets Storytelling

Spark your child’s curiosity and step into a world where science, creativity, and storytelling come together! STEAM Story Lab Adventures: STEAM Writing is a hands-on camp for children in grades 1–4 that blends building, experimenting, and writing into one unforgettable week.

Hosted at The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City in Uptown Charlotte, this camp gives young learners an inspiring environment to explore big ideas—then turn those discoveries into stories full of adventure.

Explore the Wonder with Hands-On STEAM Challenges

Campers will experiment with age-appropriate science and engineering activities—then use what they observe to create exciting story moments. From testing mini-experiments to building simple machines, each discovery becomes fuel for imagination.

STEAM Activities May Include

  • Building and testing simple machines and kid-friendly prototypes.
  • Exploring cause-and-effect through safe, guided experiments.
  • Trying design challenges that encourage creative problem-solving.
  • Observing how nature and technology can inspire new story ideas.

Create the Impossible: Inventors, Designers & Authors

This camp invites kids to be inventors, designers, and authors all at once. Campers will dream up original characters, craft story worlds shaped by real science, and imagine inventions that solve silly, serious, or surprising problems.

Storytelling Skills Campers Will Practice

  • Developing characters, settings, and beginning-middle-end structure.
  • Turning “what if?” questions into creative plot ideas.
  • Using descriptive details and illustrations to bring stories to life.
  • Revising and improving stories with gentle guidance and feedback.

Where Writing Meets Making

Each day blends writing time with creative projects like designing gadgets, drawing story maps, building prototypes, and exploring how observation fuels storytelling. Campers learn that great stories often begin with a simple question: “What could happen next?”

Creative Projects May Include

  • Designing and sketching inventions and story tools.
  • Building simple models to inspire story scenes.
  • Creating story maps, comic-style panels, or illustrated pages.
  • Connecting STEAM discoveries to plot twists and problem-solving in stories.

Collaboration, Confidence & Creativity

Through group challenges and team storytelling, campers practice brainstorming, sharing ideas, and supporting one another’s creativity. Every child becomes both a storyteller and a maker—building confidence as they present ideas and celebrate progress.

Team-Based Learning Outcomes

  • Collaboration through partner and small-group challenges.
  • Communication skills through sharing stories and ideas.
  • Confidence through positive encouragement and creativity-first learning.
  • Problem-solving through making, testing, and improving designs.

A Week of Discovery—and a Story to Take Home

By the end of camp, each young author-engineer will walk away with a polished STEAM-inspired story, a collection of mini-projects, and a boost of confidence in their creativity and curiosity.
