Course Overview


Step into Monsterland for a spooky-good time where math and imagination collide! In this hands-on adventure, students tackle creepy-cool challenges in addition, subtraction, place value, measurement, geometry, fractions, and graphing—all with the help of friendly monsters and the ever-curious Norm. With interactive stations, creative problem-solving, and tons of monster-themed fun, young math masters will boost their skills while having a blast!

Course Outline

First & Second Grade

Station #1 - Monster Hop
Students will solve addition and subtraction problems using a variety of strategies to help their monster hop through the course.

Station #2 - Measurement Monsters
Using standard and non standard measurement tools, students will create a monster. Students will then compare/contrast measurements of each monster.

Station #3 - All About My Monster
Students will collect data from several different monsters to create pictographs and bar graphs. Then students will use graphs to answer questions about individual monsters as well as all monsters.

Lunch & Rec Time

Station #4 - Where Do Monsters Live
Students will identify shapes and their attributes as they build their very own monster house.

Station #5 - Monster Land
Using a variety of place value strategies, students will solve problems to help their monster make it safely through monster land.

Third & Fourth Grade

Station #1 - Back to School Norm
Students will solve addition and subtraction problems using a variety of strategies to help Norm prepare for school.

Station #2 - Campus Map with Norm
We will create a campus map to identify selected buildings to support students using area and perimeter skills. Students will also practice measuring lengths with both metric and customary measurement systems between locations on the campus map.

Station #3 - Who Ate What at the Dining Hall?
Students will help Norm identify how much was eaten and by whom in the dining hall. This station will help students review fractions and begin to identify and solve problems with equivalent fractions.

Lunch & Rec Time

Station #4 - Shape Charlotte
Together we will tour campus and identify 2D & 3D geometric shapes and describe their attributes. Students will then create a city skyline of the city of Charlotte while comparing different 2D & 3D shapes with a focus on quadrilaterals. Will they spot Norm?

Station #5 - Multiplication/Division
Students will get to brainstorm items with Norm that come in groups of 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, 6’s, 7’s, 8’s, 9’s, 10’s, 11’s, and 12’s. With that knowledge, students will then begin to practice some strategies to solve multiplication and division one-step and two-step word problems.
