Become a Crime Scene Investigator for a Day

In the Forensic Science Workshop: Crime Scene Investigators, students in grades 5-8 will step into the role of a crime scene investigator and use science to examine evidence, follow clues and solve a mock crime.

Designed for middle school students interested in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, this hands-on workshop introduces participants to forensic techniques used in criminal investigations. Students will explore how biology, chemistry, observation and critical thinking can help investigators understand what happened at a crime scene.

Hands-On Forensic Science Activities

Working individually and in collaborative investigative teams, students will participate in engaging forensic science activities such as:

• Collecting, analyzing and classifying fingerprint patterns
• Determining blood types using safe, simulated samples
• Using paper chromatography to compare ink compositions
• Examining handwriting and written evidence
• Recording observations and evaluating scientific evidence
• Following clues to solve a mock crime scene investigation

Explore STEAM Careers in Forensic Science

Throughout the workshop, students will discover how professionals use scientific evidence to support criminal investigations. Activities will introduce participants to real-world applications of biology, chemistry, data analysis and laboratory science while highlighting careers in forensic science, criminal justice and crime scene investigation.
