Before You Register

A bachelor’s degree is required to ultimately obtain CFP® certification, though students may begin coursework before completing the degree.

The program includes seven required courses. CFP101 — Foundations of Financial Planning, Ethics & Psychology is recommended as the first course because it introduces the financial planning process, client engagement and Psychology of Financial Planning.

After CFP101, participants complete five financial planning domain courses. These courses may be completed in a flexible order:

  • CFP102 — Insurance & Risk Management Planning
  • CFP103 — Investment Planning
  • CFP104 — Income Tax Planning
  • CFP105 — Retirement Savings & Income Planning
  • CFP106 — Estate Planning

CFP107 — Capstone: Comprehensive Financial Plan Development must be taken last. Successful completion of CFP101 through CFP106 is required before beginning the Capstone.

Certificate Requirements

To earn the CFP® Certification Financial Planning Education Program certificate, participants must successfully complete all seven required courses.

Start with CFP101

CFP101 — Foundations of Financial Planning, Ethics & Psychology

CFP101 is recommended as the first course in the program and provides the foundation for the financial planning coursework that follows.

Complete the Five Domain Courses

After CFP101, complete all five domain courses. The sequence of these five courses is flexible.

  • CFP102 — Insurance & Risk Management Planning
  • CFP103 — Investment Planning
  • CFP104 — Income Tax Planning
  • CFP105 — Retirement Savings & Income Planning
  • CFP106 — Estate Planning

Finish with CFP107 Capstone

CFP107 — Capstone: Comprehensive Financial Plan Development

CFP107 is the final course in the program. Participants must successfully complete CFP101 through CFP106 before beginning the Capstone.

The Capstone is a fixed ten-week course offered during scheduled cohorts rather than through continuous enrollment.

Enrollment Windows

CFP101 through CFP106 are offered within two annual enrollment windows:

  • February 1–June 30
  • July 1–November 30

Participants complete coursework on their own schedule within the applicable enrollment window. Earlier enrollment is recommended when planning to complete multiple courses during the same window.

Because CFP107 Capstone is offered in scheduled ten-week cohorts, participants should consider their intended Capstone and CFP® exam timeline when planning their coursework.

CFP® Certification Education Requirement

UNC Charlotte’s Financial Planning Education Program Certificate is designed to satisfy the coursework portion of the education requirement for CFP® certification.

Successful completion of the program does not by itself confer CFP® certification. CFP® certification is awarded separately by CFP Board and requires candidates to satisfy additional examination, experience and ethics requirements.

Participants should review current CFP Board requirements, exam dates and applicable deadlines when planning their program timeline.
