A professional development certificate program designed for company officers, chief officers, and future leaders within the fire service. The Fire Rescue Management Institute is presented in conjunction with the Fire Safety Engineering Technology Program at UNC Charlotte.
The Fire & Rescue Management Institute is a professional development certificate program designed for company officers, chief officers, and future leaders within the fire service. Fire & Rescue professionals in managerial and supervisory roles are expected to be team leaders and must possess the ability to guide their staff in the achievement of department, division, or unit goals.
In today’s ever-changing work environment--workforce diversity, employee retention, the impact of sociological events, and the need for strategic planning--the demands placed upon those in a management role are many and increasingly more complex. The Fire & Rescue Management Institute was developed to address these needs through a comprehensive and content-rich curriculum designed by current leaders in the field of Fire & Rescue Services.
Additional Information
The Fire & Rescue Management Institute will include a vast range of professional development classes designed to enable participants to develop and hone the necessary skills to become a more effective and competent leader and manager. The program curriculum uses a modular approach to address managerial and leadership skills in four areas of development:
- Leadership & Team Building
- Management Skills & Personnel Management
- Strategic Planning
- Communication Skills
The Fire & Rescue Management Institute also provides an excellent opportunity for participants to network with Fire & Rescue personnel from outside the Charlotte region representing paid and volunteer organizations of all sizes. The program's unique format enables, supports, and encourages participants to attend from various areas of the Southeast.
Prerequisites
Program participants are required to have a high school diploma and two years of Fire & Rescue experience (volunteer or paid service) to enroll in the Fire & Rescue Management Institute.

Course curriculum is developed in consultation with our Fire & Rescue Management Institute Advisory Board of subject matter experts, faculty, and industry practitioners.
Since the program’s inception, over 500 fire service administrators have graduated from the Fire & Rescue Management Institute representing the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.
