COD211 - Coding: Make your First Video Game/Roblox Makers (Grades 7-9)

Course Overview
Roblox & Game Design Camp for Emerging Developers
Is your child ready to move from playing games to building them? Coding: Make Your First Video Game/Roblox Makers is designed for students in grades 7–9 who are curious about how games work and want to take a deeper dive into coding, design, and game mechanics.
In this camp, students learn how to plan, build, and test their own games—from an introductory 2D project to more advanced, interactive experiences in Roblox® Studio. It’s a great first step toward real-world coding and game development skills.
Make Your First Video Game: Foundations of Game Design
The camp begins with our reimagined Make Your First Video Game module, where students are introduced to the core building blocks of game creation through a 2D platformer-style project.
Core Skills Your Child Will Build
- Turn a game idea into a structured concept and design plan.
- Design and build levels that become progressively more challenging.
- Work with graphics, animations, and sound to enhance the player experience.
- Use simple coding and logic to control movement, scoring, and game rules.
- Practice testing and debugging to fix problems and improve gameplay.
Beginner-Friendly, but Ready for Middle School Minds
No previous coding experience is required, but this course is paced for older students who are ready to think critically, solve problems, and explore how professional game developers approach their work.
Online Access to Finished Projects
Completed projects are uploaded to a password-protected Black Rocket website, allowing students to share their first video game with friends and family long after camp ends.
Roblox Makers: Create and Code in Roblox Studio
After learning the basics of game structure, students apply those skills in Roblox Makers, where they design and code experiences inside the Roblox® universe. This is where game design meets scripting.
Learn Lua Coding in a Platform They Love
- Discover the Lua programming language used to power Roblox® games.
- Use Roblox Studio to build 3D worlds and interactive environments.
- Reimagine popular game genres with their own custom rules, mechanics, and features.
- Apply game design concepts like balance, difficulty, and player engagement.
- Understand how code, art, and design come together to create a finished game.
Publish and Share Their Roblox Creations
Student-created Roblox games will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website so families can see exactly what their child built and explore their creations together.
Collaborative Development and Real-World Skills
Throughout the program, students work in pairs or small development teams, mirroring how games are created in professional studios. They practice:
- Communicating ideas clearly with peers.
- Dividing tasks such as coding, level design, and testing.
- Giving and receiving constructive feedback on game ideas.
- Solving problems together when something doesn’t work as expected.
Why Parents Choose This Roblox Coding Camp for Grades 7–9
- Designed specifically for older middle school students ready for more advanced thinking.
- Teaches coding with Lua and introduces real concepts used in game development.
- Builds STEM skills in logic, problem-solving, and digital creativity.
- Turns screen time into productive, project-based learning.
- Provides tangible projects parents can see, play, and celebrate.
Help Your Teen Build Their First Roblox Game
If your child in grades 7–9 is always talking about Roblox or video games, Coding: Make Your First Video Game/Roblox Makers gives them the opportunity to step behind the scenes and become the creator. They’ll leave camp with their own games, new coding skills, and the confidence that comes from building something from the ground up.
