A Reading & Wellness Camp for Middle Schoolers

49er Minor: Mind & Motion: Reading, Wellness & Discovery is a unique summer camp experience designed for students in grades 5–8 who love stories, want to stay active, and are curious about how to take care of their minds and bodies. This camp blends literature, fitness, and mindfulness to help students build healthier habits, stronger reading skills, and greater self-awareness.

Campers are encouraged to feed their minds, move their bodies, and grow their imagination through a balanced schedule of reading, discussion, movement, and reflection.

Reading & Reflection: Exploring Stories and Self

At the heart of Mind & Motion is a focus on engaging literature. Campers dive into age-appropriate stories and texts that spark conversation, curiosity, and connection.

Literacy Activities Include

  • Reading engaging novels, short stories, or excerpts selected for middle school readers.
  • Exploring themes, plots, and characters through lively group discussions.
  • Using journaling to reflect on characters’ choices, emotions, and personal experiences.
  • Connecting reading and reflection to emotional awareness and empathy.

Through these activities, students strengthen reading comprehension while learning how stories can help them better understand themselves and others.

Movement & Mindfulness: Healthy Bodies, Focused Minds

Every day includes time for movement and mindfulness, helping students stay energized, focused, and calm.

Daily Wellness Practices

  • Group Walks or Runs: Light cardio activities that boost energy and mood.
  • Yoga or Karate Sessions: Age-appropriate routines that build strength, flexibility, and confidence.
  • Mindfulness Exercises: Simple breathing and focus activities that support concentration and stress management.

These experiences show campers how staying active and practicing mindfulness can improve their ability to focus, learn, and manage emotions—both in and out of the classroom.

Wellness, Nutrition & Mental Health Awareness

Mind & Motion also includes age-appropriate lessons that help students understand what it means to care for their whole self.

Topics Campers Explore

  • Healthy Habits: Daily routines that support focus, balance, and better learning.
  • Nutrition Basics: How the foods we eat affect energy, mood, and overall well-being.
  • Culture & Wellness: How different cultures think about food, movement, and mental health.
